Certified Sustainable Library
The Lindenhurst Memorial Library was the third New York State Library to achieve Sustainable Library Certification.
The Sustainable Libraries Initiative is an award-winning project to create leadership and provide tools to mobilize libraries to think and act sustainably. The ultimate goal is to ensure our communities thrive, can bounce back from disruption, and are infused with new and better life for everyone.
Metal & E-Waste Recyling
To date we have recycled 19,060 pounds of metal and e-Waste instead of it going into a landfill! The e-Waste event on June 12, 2021 had 31 participants that recycled 1,020 pounds of waste!
Our Community Garden, located in the Library’s backyard, has grown tomatoes, peppers, squash, eggplants, basil, mint and cucumbers! Everything that is grown, is donated to residents through Long Island Cares and our outreach table at the American Venice Farmer’s Market.
Green Business Partnership
The Lindenhurst Memorial Library has achieved Green Business Partnership. As a certified green business, the library models best green practices and works to improve the environment for future generations.
The Library is PrintReleaf Certified! PrintReleaf empowers businesses to sustain and grow our global forestry system, by certifiably reforesting our paper consumption. To view our certificate click here!
The Seed Lending Library is back and ready for you. Beginning March 15,2022 there are seed bundles to grow herbs and vegetables for a starter garden pack, as well as special Bee-way Builders. Pollinators and native plants are necessary to a healthy environment. A super easy way to help the bees? Build a Bee-way, using seeds from our seed lending library!
Support Lindy’s local bee population by making your house a “stop” on our bee trail! Special Seed Library packets are available this year that containing seeds for pollinator-friendly plants. After planting them in your yard, let us know where your “stop” is located by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. We will track the Lindy Bee Trail throughout the spring and summer and keep the community updated!
Self Service Bicycle Repair Station
Located by the bicycle rack, the Lindenhurst Memorial Library is now home to a self-serve bicycle repair station!
The Fixit includes all the tools necessary to perform basic bike repairs and maintenance, from changing a flat to adjusting brakes and derailleurs. The tools are securely attached to the stand with stainless steel cables and tamper-proof fasteners.
Hanging the bike from the hanger arms allows the pedals and wheels to spin freely while making adjustments. The Air Kit bike pump keeps your tires topped up and ready to roll.
There is a sticker with a QR code right on the front of the station that will direct you to helpful repair instructions.
