February is Black History Month. According to the Library of Congress, this annual observance originated in 1915, when Dr. Carter G. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History). In February of 1926, said organization then instituted the first “Negro History Week”. This week was chosen as to coincide with the birthdays of both Frederick Douglas, and Abraham Lincoln.
It was then in 1976, this week became officially recognized as Black History Month when U.S. president Gerald Ford issued a proclamation on the Observance of Black History Month, in which he decreed to “honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
